Today it seems like you are always hearing about ‘soft skills’. Soft skills are those transferable skills, those personal qualities and attitudes, which can be used in a number of different jobs. They help you make a positive contribution to any workplace.

So, what are the soft skills employers want?

Communication

The most important skill employers want in a new employee is communication. Those who communicate well with their colleagues know how to listen, they understand instructions and they get their points across effectively. Good communicators know how to change their communication style based upon the situation.

Decision making

Employers also want to hire people who are decisive. They want you to be able to gather the facts and make an informed decision. You need to be able to ask questions, look at the big picture, and think about all outcomes.

Commitment

It’s also important that you show a strong commitment to the job. Employers want someone who is dependable and not afraid to work hard. They prefer employees who need little supervision and stay motivated to get the job done.

Flexibility

One of the most important things you can be today is flexible. As the workplace changes, it’s crucial that you can adapt to those changes as well. It’s important to be able to step out of your comfort zone and still function effectively. Have a ‘can do’ attitude to get the job!

Time management

Everyone is faced with a deadline at some time or other, and employers look for people who know how to prioritize. They want to find employees who can work on multiple projects without dropping the ball. If you work well under pressure, it’s a plus.

Team players

Another soft skill that employers look for is the ability to work with others to achieve goals. They want people who can offer constructive suggestions, listen to others, and then work together to get things done.

Problem solvers

Being able to think both creatively and logically to solve problems is a skill highly valued by employers. They look for people who can find solutions.

Take responsibility

Finally, employers look for those who not only take pride in their work but also know how to accept responsibility when something goes wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how you handle them that counts.

Highlight these soft skills on your resume to catch the eye of potential employers. Make sure to offer examples of them when you interview. Remember, even ‘real life’ situations count. Think of how you use these skills in your everyday life, and mention those to employers. They will appreciate the fact you are thinking outside the box!
